CIA cable traffic preserved in the JFK Records Collection (released 1992-2023) documents that a man identifying himself as 'Lee Oswald' visited the Soviet and Cuban embassies in Mexico City in late September 1963; surveillance photographs taken by CIA station JMWAVE show a heavyset older man who is plainly not Oswald. The Warren Commission was never told the photos didn't match.
E. Howard Hunt — convicted Watergate burglar and career CIA officer — recorded audio confessions in 2004-2007 (released by his son St. John Hunt) naming Cord Meyer, William Harvey, David Sánchez Morales, and David Atlee Phillips as members of a CIA-linked operation he called 'the Big Event.' The 1982 National Research Council Ramsey Panel — chaired by Norman Ramsey of Harvard — re-analyzed the same Dictabelt recordings and concluded the alleged 'fourth shot' impulse occurred approximately one minute AFTER the assassination based on cross-talk from a motorcycle channel, undermining the HSCA's acoustic conclusion.
FBI ballistics matched three spent shells recovered at the sixth-floor sniper's nest to Oswald's Mannlicher-Carcano (serial C2766), which Oswald had ordered from Klein's Sporting Goods of Chicago in March 1963 under the alias 'A. Hidell' — the same alias on a Selective Service card found on his person at arrest.
Marina Oswald testified to the Warren Commission that Lee had attempted to assassinate Major General Edwin Walker in April 1963; backyard photographs (CE-133-A and CE-133-B) show Oswald holding the same Carcano alongside leftist newspapers.
